Exploring Collaboration Series: managing complex collaborations

What you'll do
As your career progresses it is likely that you will start to get involved in larger collaborative projects. These collaborations can take significant time and energy to lead, and this workshop will explore some of the approaches to doing this effectively.

What we'll cover

Governance and Oversight:

  • Clarifying collaborative goals (especially where there is interdisciplinarity / external partners)
  • Managing the budget
  • Defining roles
  • Agreeing decision-making processes
  • Clarification of recognition and authorship

Interdisciplinary Collaboration:

  • Adapting to different research cultures and expectations across disciplines.
  • Managing outputs in interdisciplinary work.

Tools and Workflows:

  • Tools and platforms for coordination
  • Data management
  • Managing reporting of activity

Responsible Practice:

  • Embedding research integrity
  • Complying with international protocols (e.g., Nagoya Protocol, Trusted Research)
  • Developing fair and equitable collaborations and decolonization of international collaboration.

After this session, you'll be able to:

  • Develop robust governance structures for large-scale, multi-partner projects.
  • Navigate the challenges of interdisciplinary work and distributed teams.
  • Select and use communication and workflow tools to suit collaborative needs.
  • Apply principles of research integrity and responsible international collaboration.

Important to know
This workshop is part of a ‘Exploring Collaboration Series’ designed to equip researchers with the skills, confidence, and tools to lead and sustain effective collaborations. Each workshop will be standalone but there will be themes which build across the workshops for participants who attend all the sessions.
