Understanding your research leadership

What you'll do
Leadership in research happens long before you have a formal title. As a researcher you are likely already leading, supporting students, shaping how work gets done, influencing the people around you. But it can be hard to see yourself as a leader, or to know how to build on what you're already doing. This workshop takes an inward focus, helping you get to know yourself better as a leader: what matters to you, where your strengths lie, and how you want to develop.

What we'll cover
Through discussion, reflection and peer learning we will:

  • explore what leadership means in a research context, and help you recognise and build on the ways you are already leading
  • use some simple frameworks as prompts for reflection, to help you understand your own approach, values and areas for development
  • begin to put words to your leadership experience in ways that are useful for applications, interviews and career conversations

Who it's for
Researchers who are starting to take on leadership responsibilities and want to reflect on their strengths, values and future development.

Why attend
The workshop will offer a supportive space to connect with peers, reflect on your leadership journey so far, and leave with a clearer sense of who you are as a leader and where you want to go next.

After this session, you'll be able to:

  • recognise leadership in your current research role
  • reflect on your leadership approach, values and strengths
  • identify areas for further leadership development
  • describe your leadership experience more clearly in applications, interviews and career conversations

This session is facilitated by Robin Henderson
